About EST

Recovering oil spills in extremely challenging environments

Working with strategic partners in Canada, Norway and China, Extreme Spill Technology (EST) is researching and developing the most promising technology in the industry to recover spilled oil in conditions of heavy seas and heavy ice.

Fact Sheet:

History
Extreme Spill Technology was started in 2005 as a division of St. Stephen Boatworks Inc., a New Brunswick company specializing in the fabrication of composite aquaculture vessels. During 2005, EST worked with the widely respected petroleum engineer Dr. Rafiq Islam, Killam Professor of Oil and Gas at Dalhousie University's Faculty of Engineering, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

After preliminary studies generated interest in Norway, the Norwegian firm Altinex ASA invested funds to perform tank tests with bunker C and crude oil, and to build a 6-metre prototype to carry out sea trials. This work was completed in 2007 and produced excellent results. (In August 2007, Altinex was acquired by Noreco.)

In 2008, further tank tests were conducted at Dalhousie's Ocean Research Centre Atlantic by Dr. Farid Taheri, with funding from the National Research Council of Canada.

Also in 2008, EST formed new alliances in Norway and China. Interest is very strong in both countries.
